Set in a fictional dynasty, the novel tells the legendary story of a protagonist who, after losing his memory, enters Xijian, the capital of the Yu Kingdom, and gets caught up in court politics and conflicts between nations as an undercover agent.
The novel uses multiple points of view, centering on the power struggle between the princes and princesses of the Yu Kingdom after the Crown Prince's mysterious death. It depicts various aspects of life in an ancient Chinese court, the workings of traditional bureaucracy, the livelihoods of ordinary people, and military warfare. By portraying the struggles within the royal family and the contests between the three major groups of scholar-officials, maternal relatives of the imperial family, and eunuchs, it explores the author's reflections on traditional Chinese political culture and historical writing.
The titles and institutions of the various countries are drawn from different dynasties. Artifacts and customs are mostly based on history, though some may be the author's inventions for the sake of the story. Readers need not scrutinize them too closely.

Deliberately using seemingly reasonable inferences to reach a wrong conclusion is to reveal a mistake that people are prone to make. But it's still a bit cruel to risk two and a half lives.
