Preferences (not every recommended story will fit, but most do): The protagonists don't suffer too much; few melodramatic plot twists; students treat one another as equals and don't tear each other down; works from recent years and lesser-known works.
Dislikes (not every recommended story will avoid these, but most do): Bashing Lily, bashing Dumbledore, bashing Gryffindor, whitewashing Voldemort, and Lucius pairings (he's married).
