[The King's Avatar] Han Ling

*This isn't a long novel. I wrote these various short stories to commemorate how much I loved The King's Avatar after finishing it.

Han Ling

Five years younger than Han Wenqing

She and Han Wenqing share a father but have different mothers. She was born to a mistress, and their father named her Han Yuling. Yu was the middle character used in the names of the Han family's women from generation to generation. Ling comes from the same poem as the Qing in Han Wenqing's name, "Cold Dew on the Han River": "A clear, melodious tune gradually fades away; the moon is high, and someone stands in a pearl palace." It describes a clear, lilting voice.

But the legitimate wife was a jealous woman. When she learned that her husband had fathered an illegitimate child with another woman, she didn't confront him directly. Instead, she used her family's influence to secretly arrange for the mistress and Han Yuling to be killed. The mistress had no choice but to flee. Though she wasn't especially fond of children, she couldn't bear to let the baby she'd carried for ten months be killed, so she left the not-yet-two-year-old Han Yuling in front of an orphanage.

Han Yuling was taken in by the orphanage. Still learning to talk, she couldn't pronounce the character Yu very well. When the director asked her name, she stammered out the two syllables "hang ling." Her mother had sung that poem to her many times, so she also recited it haltingly. Since it happened to be very cold that day, the director wrote her surname as "Han" and named her Han Ling.
