Yuan Yu, female, a warp-drive physicist. She likes beautiful people and interstellar travel, and dislikes exploitation, oppression, and carrots. She can't help flirting whenever she sees someone beautiful, so she has a whole bunch of boyfriends and girlfriends. After being betrayed, she lost some of her confidence, and still feels pain whenever she thinks about it. She has a very caring family member, Sergei, a warp-drive ship called the Raven that she can live aboard for at least ten years, a lofty ideal, and the social responsibility and sense of duty that matter even more to Fleet citizens.
Mint Wills (Menthy Wills), male, a tour guide at a tourist station on a colony planet. Born poor, he was raised to believe he should go to the big city and marry a good man. But then he happened to meet Yuan Yu, who chose him and brought him aboard the fleet, completely turning his worldview upside down.
Sergei Ivanovichi Menschenrecht (Sergei Ivanovichi Menschenrecht), male, a food genetic engineer who is an excellent cook. Gentle and sunny, he is very kind to others, but fiercely protective of his own, especially Yuan Yu, who is family. He worries about her a great deal.
Qin Jianguo, male, a genetic designer. He has been betrayed by someone, much like Yuan Yu, and is deeply hurt, so they sympathize with each other. However, he is naturally optimistic and easygoing, dyes his hair, and thanks to his name, possesses some mysterious knowledge that most people in the 23rd century have never heard of.
For various reasons, these four people came together and formed an ordinary family by Fleet citizen standards. But they still have all sorts of problems, big and small, to face. No matter: as the ancients put it, "If you have the means, get to it; if you don't, create the means and get to it anyway." They're Fleet citizens, after all, right?

The relationship between the main characters in this novel is not romantic love in the traditional sense, but is closer to the familial affection between family members (similar to the idea of romantic love turning into familial affection after marriage in today's world).
