The protagonist, Bian Boming, is an ordinary employee at a modern internet company. Overnight, he transmigrates back to the Northern Song dynasty and becomes an adviser in a general's household. Together with General Wei Yan and his elder brother Liu Kezhen, he debates the affairs of state with famous Northern Song scholars and politicians, helping the new ruler ascend the throne step by step and eventually become prime minister. Throughout the process, Bian Boming grows stronger and more decisive, and becomes adept at strategy. He and Wei Yan also develop a bond of affection and destiny that cannot be broken.
