Soulmates: The Tribulation of a Thousand-Year Reincarnation

Soulmate

Lyrics: Lan Xiaoxie

Performed by: Tian Fuzhen

If you were a spring breeze,

I would surely be the kite flying farthest away.

If you were a door, locked tight in some alley,

I would be the vine outside it.

If you were a rare rainbow,

I would be the gasp of wonder from a passerby.

If you were a distant star, visible but out of reach,

I would be the gaze looking up at you.

But you chose to be an ordinary person,

so I fell in love with who you are.

I would willingly keep my soul trapped in this body,

just so I could be right for you.

But you are the most ordinary person of all.

You look so wonderful, yet your heart is so foolish.

Our hands have touched, our shoulders have brushed,

but our souls cannot recognize each other.

When you are the second hand, always rushing onward,

I am the gears churning behind you.

When you are a drop of blue ink, not yet dry on the nib,

I am the mark left on the back of the page.

It turns out you chose to be an ordinary person,

but not one who could love me.

No matter which body my soul is trapped in,

we were never meant to be right for each other.

It turns out I have become an ordinary person too.

I understand everything, yet my heart still aches.

We have laughed and talked together, shared our innermost thoughts,

but our souls still dare not recognize each other.

P.S. This story came to me on a whim after I heard the song "Soulmate." It's a lovely, evocative song. Give it a listen.
