Blurb:
Su Shi'an is a blacksmith who lives in Luofeng Town, on the northwestern frontier.
He's frail and sickly, but his face is so stunning it's almost unfair.
The military families in town gossip among themselves, saying the blacksmith is even more beautiful than the saintess of the Northern Barbarian tribes, and would make the perfect concubine if they kidnapped him.
Someone actually tries it, and the blacksmith deals with him that very night.
Later, chaos breaks out in the northwest. The Northern Barbarians invade, and the blacksmith turns the tide and saves everyone in town. With a single long saber, he makes everyone lose their desire to lay hands on him.
Later still, a very important figure arrives in town. They say he's the blacksmith's enemy and creditor.
The blacksmith denies it, but his actions tell another story: he dodges whenever he can and runs whenever possible.
Unfortunately, he can't hide or escape. He's carried back to the smithy, and doesn't come out for three days and three nights.
The next time anyone sees him, he's as fearsome as a jade-faced Night Rakshasa. He grabs his long saber and goes to take out his anger on the barbarians.
The important figure follows behind with his army, effortlessly conquering the Western Regions and riding across the grasslands.
The important figure, Xiao Changyun: "With a general like this, I am delighted. I shall announce peace throughout the land at once. The great general is to return to the capital by imperial decree, and I will welcome him myself."
Su Shi'an: "..."
Don't think I haven't memorized that poem: "When peace is restored and you return, I shall welcome you and unfasten your armor, General!"
Xiao Changyun, Emperor Chengzu of the Great Liang.
"Cheng" means success and achievement.
He rode west through the Jade Gate and conquered the Western Regions, destroyed the northern cavalry and rode across the grasslands, sailed east across the sea and brought the four corners of the land to heel, and traveled south across the Western Ocean to make his name known abroad.
He laid the foundations for the Great Liang's golden age.
Yet this emperor, whose name resounded through the ages, once had an anecdote that people loved to discuss.
He traveled a thousand miles to a frontier town and captured a blacksmith with a handsome face and a ferocious temper.
He claimed the man was his enemy and his debtor, but in truth he dared neither hit nor scold him. He could only indulge him, coax him, and treat him like an ancestor.
And by treating him so well, he somehow raised a peerless general who carved his name into the Yanran Mountains, watered his horses at the Vast Sea, and sealed his legacy at Mount Langju.
Su Shi'an: "I won those victories with my own skill. You didn't raise me to do it."
Xiao Changyun: "Yes, yes. You don't need to earn it. Just sit back and enjoy it."
Su Shi'an: "You bastard...!!"
