Europe lies in the northwest of the Eastern Hemisphere. It borders the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and faces Africa across the Mediterranean Sea to the south. To the east, it is connected to the Asian continent. Europe covers 10.1 million square kilometers, including its affiliated islands, and accounts for only 6.8% of the world’s total land area. If we consider only regions suitable for human habitation, Europe occupies no more than one-twelfth of the Earth’s habitable land. Yet Europe had a population of around 800 million in 1985, about 16% of the world’s total. Its population includes more than 160 ethnic groups.
