An ever-restless gong who falls hard while pursuing someone, but gives up when his feelings aren't returned, versus a loyal, devoted, taciturn guard who takes the shou role.
Gong POV.
Short story.
Here's a blurb:
1. A: I'm the strongest of all the guards, so my master should have the strongest guard, too.
Prince: Oh, then I'll take him as my guard! (Points to someone at random.)
A: Wait, that's not right! Shouldn't you treat me as special, then show off your strength and win me over?
Prince: Heh. I'm just an idle prince. I'm not trying to usurp the throne, so why would I need the strongest guard?
2. B: Prince, I want this.
Prince: Sure.
B: Prince, come with me to...
Prince: Sure.
B: Prince, you and I... If you don't, we're breaking up.
Prince: Sure. Let's break up.
B: What? Aren't you supposed to cherish and spoil me, and grant my every wish?
Prince: You're imagining things. I'm not a masochist.
3. C: Prince, your station is exalted, while mine is lowly. I don't dare bring shame upon you.
Prince: Do you mean that?
C: Yes. I know how you feel, but I'm not worthy of you...
Prince: I understand. (Leaves.)
C: Aren't you supposed to do everything you can to put my fears to rest, stay devoted, and wait for me to come around?
Prince: Hmph. Someone who doesn't even have the courage to stand by my side, and does nothing but wallow in self-pity, could never be my beloved.
