The novel was originally titled The Naive Little Fox. The first few chapters mostly describe the meeting between Ping Xie, and the main plot gets underway several dozen chapters later. I know I've read plenty of Ping Xie fanfiction where Wu Xie turns into a fox, but that's not the main focus here. The events behind everything go back to ten years before the present.
Ten years ago, a shocking human experiment took place among several of the great families of the time. The experiment was conducted by the Wu family, then the most technologically advanced. A rebellion broke out within the Wu family. Some of the rebels seized its most prized technological resources, and, in pursuit of greater profits, did not hesitate to use children aged three to six as test subjects. They even targeted members of their own family.
The Wu family already held a high position among the great families. They helped coordinate relations among the various sects and provided weapons for them to fight their common enemies. The experiments were conducted with the cooperation of the great families, but no one expected the rebels to shatter the balance.
After the disastrous experiments began, the researchers working under the rebels secretly launched a massive child-snatching operation, searching for more suitable test subjects. This led to the largest wave of disappearances at the time. As the missing-child crisis grew more obvious, all the allied families came together to find a solution. But then the experiments went horribly wrong. Everyone at the site disappeared, including the captive children, without a trace. The truth vanished...
