After the Kuomintang retreated to Taiwan in 1949, it promulgated martial law for 38 years. During the long years when Taiwan was separated from the motherland, it was Teresa Teng's singing that connected the hearts of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. It was also her singing that gave thousands of young people on the mainland a new understanding of human nature, culture, and love.
