At noon, the entire Shuangmendong Alley was quiet. Zheng Huan wiped his face carelessly, went outside, and opened the front door of one of the houses.
As soon as he stepped inside, the smell of something burnt hit his nose. Zheng Huan rushed into the kitchen and saw A Ze covering his mouth with his sleeve. Black smoke was billowing from the pot, and A Ze couldn't stop coughing. Zheng Huan hurriedly dragged him out of the kitchen, then went back in by himself.
A Ze apologized. "I messed up again."
Zheng Huan glanced at A Ze and sighed helplessly.
"My brother told me." His eyes said it all: Was there anything in this world his brother couldn't do, apart from studying?
Zheng Huan turned back to the kitchen. "What do you want to eat?" A Ze followed him.
"Ramen. Can I help?"
"No. Don't do anything. That's how you can help." Zheng Huan spoke quickly as he picked up the pot. He turned around and saw A Ze gazing at him. For a moment, Zheng Huan wanted to look away.
"But, Zheng Huan..." A Ze lowered his eyes and spoke slowly.
"What?"
"Thank you."
"For what?"
"For everything."
Zheng Huan froze, then curled the corner of his mouth. "You little brat, what's gotten into you?" The water had been boiling for a while, and layers of steam drifted between them.
Zheng Huan abruptly changed the subject. "There probably won't be anyone home this afternoon either. Come eat at my place." He put the noodles in the pot. "I have a blind date this afternoon, so I won't be able to come over."
"It's fine," A Ze replied slowly. "Deok Sun is coming back today."
"Then that's all right."
"But is the person you're meeting pretty?" A Ze asked.
"I've seen her photo. She's very pretty." Zheng Huan nodded. "Just my type." He handed the pot to A Ze. "It's ready."
