Yan Xiaoai (Ming Dynasty)

This is not a transmigration or rebirth story. It is set in the Ming dynasty and draws on unofficial history, with a serious tone.

1: Characters in the first part: Yan Xiaoai, Prince of Yan Zhu Di, Prince of Jin Zhu Gang, Prince of Ning Zhu Quan, Princess of Yan Xu Miaoyun, and the generals under Zhu Di.

2: Period: Hongwu Years 25 to 31

3: The first part focuses on events as they unfold. Much of the plot lays groundwork for later developments, so the pacing is relatively slow.

1: Characters in the second part: Prince of Yan Zhu Di, his adviser Daoyan, the general Zhang Yu and others, Emperor Jianwen Zhu Yunwen, court officials Huang Zicheng and Qi Tai, and Yan Xiaoai.

2: Period: Jianwen Year 1 to Yongle Year 1 (Zhu Di's accession to the throne)

3: Court debates and military strategy will lean more heavily on history, with less romance.

A few things to know before reading:

1: Zhu Di lost his mother as a child and endured many hardships. He is reserved, cold, and ruthless. But he has little choice, caught up in court politics and war, and can no longer be judged by simple standards of kindness and morality. (His fief is Beiping.)

2: Zhu Gang is brash and unruly, and has done much for his fief. He tries to use Yan Xiaoai to gather information about Zhu Di, but later falls in love with her. In the end, he naturally has to humble himself. (His fief is Taiyuan.)

3: Zhu Quan is the seventeenth prince. He is young and was the last to receive a fief, so he is close to Zhu Yuanzhang. His princely army has the most weapons and equipment. He is skilled in literature and poetry. (His fief is Daning, within present-day Inner Mongolia.)

4: As Princess of Yan, Xu Miaoyun is a shrewd woman. She is Xu Da's daughter, a valiant daughter of a military family, and deeply devoted to Zhu Di. But her father was poisoned to death by Zhu Yuanzhang, and she resents him for it.

5: The Ming dynasty was the last glorious era in Chinese history ruled by Han Chinese, and its founder of that golden age, the Yongle Emperor Zhu Di, deserves much of the credit.

6: I personally like him a lot, but I won't whitewash his actions. I am doing my best to face and understand everything he did. Discussion is welcome. >
