Sorry, You're Not Good Enough for Me

Over the past seven years, women came and went from Gu Yunchen's life, but there was one woman he stayed in touch with for a long time. A friend once asked Gu Yunchen, "What's really going on between you and Mu Xin?" Gu Yunchen frowned. "Why are you asking?" His friend said, "If there's nothing between you two, I'm going to ask her out." Gu Yunchen paused, then said lightly, "Oh, there's nothing between us. We went to college together. If you really want to know what our relationship was, she used to have a crush on me." "She used to sneak glances at me in college, write me love letters, take notes for me, and even bring me homemade lunches..." Gu Yunchen gave away a little more detail than he meant to, with a hint of unconcealed pride in his voice. "No way. What happened after that?" "After that, I got together with the girl who delivered her love letters to me." "..." One of the gossipers around Mu Xin asked her, "What's really going on between you and that Gu Yunchen guy?" Mu Xin thought seriously for a while before answering, "We're just ordinary friends." Gu Yunchen's girlfriends were all sexy, sultry types. He never imagined he'd fall for Mu Xin, with her blunt bangs, black-rimmed glasses, old-fashioned clothes, and mild, boring personality as bland as plain water. Back when he turned Mu Xin down, he was afraid she'd keep pestering him, so he deliberately told her not to flatter herself, that he had never liked her, and even asked whether she thought the two of them were a good match. Only later, when he couldn't have Mu Xin no matter how much he wanted her, did he understand that this was his comeuppance. He was the one who had been flattering himself, and he was the one who wasn't good enough for her. P.S. The male lead suffers, not the female lead. He's the one who falls for her first.
