Empress Chen was descended from Chen Ying, a founding hero of the Western Han dynasty and Marquis of Tangyi. She was the daughter of Chen Wu, Marquis of Tangyi, and Grand Princess Liu Piao. During the reign of Emperor Jing of Han, she married Crown Prince Liu Che as his crown princess. When Liu Che ascended the throne, she became the seventh officially recognized empress of the Han dynasty.
In the fifth year of Yuanguang, she was deposed on the charge of "being bewitched by shamans" and retired to Changle Palace. Her eventful life gave rise to the allusions "hiding a beauty in a golden house" and "buying a poem at Changle Gate," which have been celebrated in literary works throughout the ages.
