After Pangu perished in his tribulation, the twelve divine generals who had survived under his command carried on his legacy, continuing to subdue the evil spirits and savage beasts that threatened the peace of heaven and earth. Nearly a thousand years later, after joining forces to slay an ancient ferocious beast in a brutal battle, the twelve generals, their powers damaged, each took one of Pangu's secret treasures and went into hiding in a different corner of the world. Their descendants spread throughout the world's four great seas and eight directions, a region henceforth known as the Four Seas and Eight Wilds. Another ten thousand years passed, and the descendants of six of the generals, the Immortal, Demon, Yaoguai, Ghost, Human, and Beast Gods, grew ever more numerous. Taking their ancestors' titles as their names, they formed the six peoples of immortals, demons, yaoguai, ghosts, humans, and divine beasts. They divided the land into territories and each governed its own, together becoming known as the Six Realms. Apart from these six peoples, other groups also branched off and multiplied, including the sea folk of the four seas to the east, west, south, and north; the immortals of the three mountains of Penglai, Fangzhang, and Yingzhou; and the spirit birds, who had retreated far away to the land of Miaoluo, cut off from the world.
