Sentinel and Guide: A Collection of Related Settings

During adolescence, usually between the ages of 10 and 20, some teenagers develop extraordinary abilities. Some awaken as Sentinels, while others awaken as Guides. The relationship between a Sentinel and a Guide is like that between a gun and its trigger. Sentinels protect Guides, while Guides assist and guide Sentinels. Guides are much rarer than Sentinels, and extremely precious. They have little freedom. Once their abilities awaken, they are sent to the Tower for standardized education. Once they reach the required level, they are assigned a Sentinel to bond with. (They are basically tied down for life and cannot escape.) Sentinels and Guides usually form partnerships to carry out missions on the battlefield. The process of becoming partners involves physical and mental bonding. Generally, the bond is for life, unless one partner dies and the other survives, though such cases are very rare. If a Sentinel dies and the Guide survives, the Tower immediately assigns the Guide a new partner. A Sentinel who loses their Guide will not be assigned another partner unless they have special value.
