The Tang Dynasty was shattered by the devastating blow of the Huang Chao Rebellion, reduced to a state of ruin in all but name. In 903, Zhu Quanzhong, a rebel general who had defected to the Tang, turned against the dynasty once more. He seized Emperor Zhaozong and executed hundreds of eunuchs, finally wiping out the eunuch faction that had held power for more than a century. In 907, Zhu Quanzhong deposed Emperor Ai and proclaimed himself emperor, changing the dynasty's name to Liang, known to history as Later Liang, and establishing its capital at Kaifeng. The Tang Dynasty had now come to a complete end, and history once again entered an age of warlord strife and widespread division.
