Next to Normal won the 2009 Tony Awards for Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations, and Best Actress, as well as the 2010 Pulitzer Prize. In the play, the heroine imagines that Gabe, her son who died of an illness when he was only a few months old, is still alive and already eighteen, living at home with his family. But with the heroine's delusions so powerful, she clearly needs treatment. By the end of the play, she realizes her delusions are false and leaves home to recover. This short piece is a bit of speculation about what happens to the Gabe her mind has imagined. I’ve always felt this was the inevitable ending, so whenever I watch the play, I can’t help feeling a little indignant on behalf of his innocent parents and sister. That’s my own failing... The ending borrows a little from the play, leaving us with a bright little coda... Well, are you sure that’s a bright coda (?)
