Tang Su'e's Miscellaneous Records of Duyang: "At the beginning of the Dazhong era, the Kingdom of the Women presented a pair of double-dragon rhinoceros horns and brocade bright as rosy clouds. Its people wore tall topknots and gold crowns, with necklaces draped over their bodies, so they were called 'Bodhisattva Barbarians.' The entertainers of the time then sang the tune 'Bodhisattva Barbarian,' and scholars often imitated its lyrics." (As quoted in Volume 5 of the Tune Handbook.) The Tangyin Guijian and Nanfang Xinshu give roughly the same account. The Beimen Suoyan also says: "Emperor Xuanzong loved to sing the lyrics of 'Bodhisattva Barbarian.' Chancellor Linghu secretly presented him with a piece written by Fei Qing, warning him not to let it be known." In the Tang dynasty, beautiful women were commonly called bodhisattvas, while the ruler of the Kingdom of the Women was known as the Bodhisattva Barbarian. The music bureau of the time set lyrics to a melody, and it became the name of a ci tune.
