P.S. My favorite story used to be The Right Wing of the Gods. I really loved its portrayal of angels.
I also love Qiwei's July's Chaotic Times and Nine Days for the Crow. The Featherfolk and the like are so adorable, too.
But my favorite setting of all is the world beneath the sea. I love the vast, untamed ocean and the beautiful, mysterious spirits who live in it: merfolk.
Although there are lots of stories about merfolk online, and the authors write wonderfully, I could never find one that quite suited my tastes.
The merfolk I love aren't weaklings who become helpless the moment they leave the water, nor are they pitiful creatures reduced to baby-making tools in futuristic stories. They should be the proudest race in the world, absolute rulers of the ocean. They can be handsome and mysterious, cold and ruthless, cruel and unrestrained, or gentle and pure, innocent and kind, as long as that's what they want to be.
They are nobles from the deep sea, and they disdain the land. In their eyes, that cramped little patch of ground is nothing but a cage built to protect the weak.
That is what merfolk are: freedom and strength combined.
There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand readers' eyes, and everyone has their own merfolk in mind. Now I've written the merfolk I imagine. My writing isn't very good, so I hope you'll forgive any mistakes.
