Nian waited at the mouth of a cave to take out the monster that legend said would bring him trouble. Instead, he found Bai Chuan, a helpless, physically weak bottom.

And not just any bottom, but one being hunted by a green-skinned taro, a creature at the very bottom of the food chain. So Nian took Bai Chuan home and kept him as a pet, making him the first human emergency ration ever raised by a ghost.
