The Dog Slayer's Faraway World

When did it begin? As far back as I can remember, my father was never there...

Back then, whenever I saw my older brother, still a boy himself, I'd run happily over to him. Sometimes I'd have a ball with me, sometimes a question I couldn't figure out. I'd ignore my mother's warnings and throw myself joyfully at him.

I can't remember what we talked about then, but I do remember the rare smile that broke through his eternally frozen expression. Like a spring in a mountain valley, it was something I could never forget.
