The prince and princess consort were deeply devoted to each other, but had no children for many years. They eventually gave up hope. Then, in her forties, the princess consort was unexpectedly delighted to discover she was pregnant, and gave birth to Zhao Chenyu. Moved by all his wife had endured, the prince reported the birth of their daughter to the emperor, his elder brother. Seeing that his beloved younger brother had finally had an heir, the emperor immediately named Zhao Chenyu the heir apparent of the princedom and entered her into the imperial family register as the future successor to the prince's estate.
