The whole story is lighthearted, told in a series of jokes about the protagonist starting high school and meeting a bunch of great [idiotic] friends.
The author's writing is at an elementary-school level. The goal is to become as great as an author they really admire.
"My hemorrhoids and constipation are acting up again today, but thanks to this book, I can still be heard laughing heartily in the bathroom!"
The protagonist has lots of close guy friends, and the story is mainly about his adventures with them. The real romance probably won't show up until later.
