Crossing Paths

[Synopsis] The Wei family of Jiangnan is known for its strict family values. The eldest son is as refined as jade, the third son is gentle and graceful, and the other one... is rarely home. Everyone in the household sings from the same hymn sheet: “That's right, our second young master has gone out of town again to donate money for a school. He can't help it, he's so indifferent to fame and fortune, and so kindhearted. All he ever wants to do is teach people to read. Oh, you're too kind.” His good name was known throughout the land. So when the emperor came to Jiangnan, he brought his younger brother along and personally called at the Wei residence, specifically asking to meet the most benevolent man alive. That night, an urgent letter was sent from the Wei residence to the Moonlit Palace on Mount Qingcang. A servant came galloping up, tumbled off his horse, and shouted at the top of his lungs from outside the mountain gate: “Second Young Master, there's been a disaster!” Wei Tingyue, who was just about to lead his disciples out to kill someone: “Hm?” His Highness Prince Ning had always disliked fighting and was liable to feel faint at the sight of blood, clutching his handkerchief to his chest. According to the rumors, the Wei family's second young master had the same symptoms. What a coincidence. Later, the Wei family hosted a banquet for their honored guests. Wei Tingyue appeared in white, looking frail and scholarly, supported by someone on either side. Apparently, on his way back to the residence, he'd accidentally fallen off a cliff and lost his memory. He'd forgotten everything he'd done before, from building schools to gathering students and teaching them. Now, whenever anyone asked him about it, he got a headache. The emperor asked with concern, “Was he really injured that badly?” Everyone in the household nodded in unison. “Very badly, Your Majesty. Extremely badly.” Wei Tingyue propped his forehead up with one hand and put on a convincing act, as though he was about to faint at any moment. Before he could fall, however, Prince Ning grabbed him by the hand. Jing Yanxing gazed at him tenderly. “A-Yue.” Wei Tingyue's attempt to faint was interrupted. He stared blankly.
