Harry realizes that when he was a child, he saw Dumbledore's wisdom, strength, tolerance, and warmth. Only after growing up does he understand the complexity, burden, loneliness, and exhaustion in Dumbledore's heart; that he has stood alone on the summit for so long, and must be terribly lonely; that he laid out such an enormous game of chess, yet could only let go and pray that everything would turn out all right; that he had no choice but to push himself to the brink of death, yet still spread his arms to protect Harry. In some ways, they are much alike: in the Mirror of Erised, they both see a love they can never reclaim; they both have to bury their secrets deep in their hearts, unable to share them even with the people they trust most; they are both surrounded by many people, yet must walk the final stretch alone. Harry thinks it's strange. As a child, he admired Dumbledore for his brilliance, but as an adult, he fell in love with him for his imperfections.
