What makes a mortal? Is it to toil ceaselessly over the furnace and study herbs day and night, devoting oneself to improving one's cultivation? Is it to cast aside the mortal world and focus on understanding the Dao, taking no interest in worldly affairs? Is it to accumulate merit, save all beings, and devote oneself to cultivating the spirit? To attain the immortal Dao, first cultivate the human Dao!
