Original plot summary of Tears from Heaven:

Zhan Yunfei, the eldest son of the Zhan family, loses his wife in childbirth. After leaving home for four years, he returns and encounters Xiao Yufeng, who has fallen into the water. He falls in love with her at first sight, and his affection only deepens. He despises his half-brother Yunxiang, believing him to be a ruthless rich man.

Xiao Mingyuan, the father of the Xiao family, owes money to the Zhan family’s bank and cannot repay it, so the debt remains unpaid. When Zhan Yunxiang comes to collect, he sets fire to an empty house, the Mountain Villa of Pride. The Xiao family’s fifth child rushes into the flames to save a rag doll, Little Bunny. Xiao Mingyuan dies in the fire while trying to rescue the child, who is badly injured. The Xiao and Zhan families are now bound by a blood feud.

Zhan Yunxiang offers the Xiao family five hundred silver dollars as compensation, but Xiao Yujuan refuses to accept it, demanding that the Zhan family pay for the blood debt with blood. The two sisters go to the Moon-Waiting Pavilion to sing for a living. Zhan Yunfei changes his name to Su Mubai and falls in love with Xiao Yufeng.

To help Xiao Yufeng, Zhan Yunfei takes the money his younger brother Zhan Yunxiang has earned and keeps subsidizing the five members of the Xiao family, claiming he is doing it to atone for the Zhan family. Ji Tianhong, Zhan Yunxiang’s wife, is openly in love with Zhan Yunfei. To stay in the Zhan household and wait for Zhan Yunfei to return, she marries Zhan Yunxiang, planting the seeds of his hatred for Zhan Yunfei.

To help the Xiao family get revenge, Zhan Yunfei officially changes his surname to Su and moves out of the Zhan home, buying a house elsewhere. But the money he spends still comes from Zhan Yunxiang’s earnings. He joins forces with Zheng Chengbei to set Zhan Yunxiang up for gambling, causing him to lose more than half of the Zhan family’s assets.

Ji Tianhong continues secretly helping Zhan Yunfei. When Zhan Yunxiang discovers this, he flies into a rage and beats her, causing her to miscarry. Devastated, Ji Tianhong loses her mind and is later hit and killed by a car. The Ji family’s father and son hold a grudge and seize what remains of the Zhan family’s assets, leaving Zhan Chengnan bankrupt.

Zhan Yunfei has Zhan Yunxiang sent to prison. Later, disillusioned with life, Zhan Yunxiang becomes a monk. Zhan Yunfei and Xiao Yufeng marry with Zheng Chengbei officiating, then move back to Xikou. All the land once occupied by twenty-one households now belongs to them. Zheng Chengbei becomes Zheng Yicheng.
