A Nobody in the Barracks

We see plenty of mighty, imposing generals in the military camps, but how often do we spare a thought for the lives of the rank-and-file soldiers who pitch tents and feed the horses? Zhang Dong is one such soldier, bringing up the rear and envying the mounted troops at the head of the line. He's a little clever, but nothing special, and knows how to flatter his superiors. In matters of the heart: He has a bit of a crush on Doctor He, looks out for Qi Rui'an, and is both a little afraid of and a little fond of Deputy General Shao. For now, he has no plans to take all three of them for himself. The place of his official wife is currently reserved for Deputy General Shao. Unless he dies in battle, Zhang Dong won't replace him. But the battlefield is unpredictable, so Shao should be careful. If he dies, there's nothing I can do to help him. As for professional ability: Zhang Dong is no professional. He's a novice at everything. Later, he'll contribute to the military camp, but his contributions will never be as important as the generals'. Any rewards he gets will be small. Becoming a lucky general is completely out of the question. As for his work performance: Zhang Dong deserves credit here. This is the one thing he does well! He's good at flattery, kind-hearted, and friendly, so everyone likes him. He's starting to make a name for himself among the camp's middle-ranking officers, and soon he'll be a familiar face. Life in the military camp should get easier for him from then on. He might even get the chance to meet important leaders in the camp, and talk or shake hands with the big boss. That would be enough to make him feel he'd made it in life! Most importantly, our Zhang Dong will always remain an ordinary little man. He won't turn out to be a prince by birth, and he won't suddenly rise to prominence and throw his rank around. In short, long live the little guy!
