Synopsis

This is a contribution to Ninglu Bar's 2013 event, titled "Thirteen Unscientific Prompts." Each participant came up with a set of thirteen keywords and sent it to the host, who numbered, bundled, and encrypted the sets before sending them back out. After everyone drew lots, the codes were revealed, and each person had to write about the prompt set matching their number. This is the god-awful set of thirteen advanced math prompts I got stuck with: rational substitution, radius of convergence, squeeze theorem, shell method, triple integrals, roots of a polynomial, natural numbers, contour lines, infinite limits, Green's theorem, spiral curves, absolute value, and the trapezoidal rule for approximation. I guess this is just how lucky I am with draws. Somehow, I actually turned it into a story, and I'm impressed with myself [as a perfectionist, I even managed to work in all thirteen words]. Thanks to my friend Mi Hua, who's doing a master's in math, for rescuing this science dunce who could barely even remember what a Cartesian coordinate system was. Still, don't take the math or Go too seriously. Feel free to skim those parts, since our main business is romance [hey!]. Theme:
