The cave walls were especially damp, and fragrant green orchids hung upside down from the crags' fissures, their leaves slightly tousled and curled like a beauty's green hair after waking from sleep. Apart from the clear, quiet plink of dripping water, there was no other sound. It was utterly still and desolate. This was the secluded place where Ling Xiu often came to practice in solitude. It was here, in a daze, that the boy let the god have his way with him."
