Taozi's parents divorced, leaving only her and her grandmother. Growing up without parents made Taozi even more resilient. Though life was difficult, she refused to accept help from others. She would rather suffer and work harder herself than let people take pity on her. Everyone saw only her outward appearance and failed to notice the pain inside. This only made her work harder. She knew that one day, through her own efforts, she would give her grandmother a comfortable life.
On his way back to his hometown to visit his parents-in-law, Taozi's father happened to pass by the home where he grew up. When he saw his elderly mother and young daughter, he was overcome with regret. He wanted to bring them both to live with him, but his new wife found out and did everything she could to stop him.
