A young woman determined to devote herself to the noble cause of snatching lives from the Black and White Impermanences successfully saves her first patient. Since the Thousand Gold Valley's rules state that payment can take any form but must be made immediately, she and the Black and White Impermanences agree to postpone collecting the patient's life. The following conversation then takes place.
The former patient: "Why don't I marry you? We can sign the marriage contract right now."
The girl: "I saved you, not the other way around. Why should I give myself to you in return?"
The patient: "...I could take care of you, so you'd have someone to rely on."
The girl: "I don't need anyone to take care of me. Besides, you sound like a nobleman with servants at your beck and call. In those grand estates, women fight each other as fiercely as people do at court. Are you sure this is repaying a favor and not taking revenge?"
The patient: "...I could give you a place to live in luxury, so you wouldn't have to scrape by in the Thousand Gold Valley."
The girl: "If you can afford a life of luxury, just pay me in cash now."
The patient: "...I could make sure you see all kinds of corpses and deaths every day. There's nothing you could imagine that you wouldn't get to see!"
The girl: "When can we set out?"
