The Gulf Stream is the world's largest ocean current, also known as the Gulf of Mexico (warm) current. Although part of the Gulf Stream originates in the Gulf of Mexico, most of it comes from the Caribbean Sea. After the North and South Equatorial Currents converge in the western Atlantic, they enter the Caribbean Sea and pass through the Yucatan Channel. A small portion flows into the Gulf of Mexico, then along its coast, while most of the current suddenly turns east and enters the Atlantic through the Florida Straits.
