[Mouse and Cat | Ancient Style] Foreshadowing

“Go back. It’s late.”

“Master, that patron Bai comes here every year. Did he make some kind of promise to you?”

“He comes to keep a promise, though the promise may not have been made for anyone in particular. When someone weighs on your heart, you naturally come.”

“I heard Patron Bai say just now that tonight he hopes to meet an old friend in his dreams. Master, was the old friend he spoke of the scholar I saw when I was little, the one who came alongside him?”

“Heh. That scholar was no scholar. Sanbao, you don’t understand him...”

“Why not? I remember clearly that he was a scholar. Did I remember wrong? Master, he was a scholar.”

“Silly child, it’s just a story, in the end. Scholar or knight-errant, the legends remember him. His identity is no more than a robe worn by a traveler, changed from time to time. Only those who don’t understand him can be fooled by it.”

“Master, I don’t understand...”

“When you’re older, you’ll understand naturally. Sanbao, let’s go.”

The master and his disciple took the moon for a lamp and left tracks in the snow as they slowly made their way toward the meditation rooms in the rear courtyard.

The lights in the hall suddenly went dark. Where the moonlight fell, the incense had burned to ash.

P.S. This is a pretty short story, with a happy ending. I’m just posting it here, so please enjoy as you like.
