Xiuxiu Without a Face

There was no matchmaker in the courtyard, no guests, no parents, no banquet table laden with food and no lively hubbub. There was only a little boy standing before the dilapidated wooden gate, staring blankly at the backwards wedding character pasted on it.

He slowly turned his head and saw the bride who had just stepped out of the sedan chair.

Her hand was still held in the groom's rough one. Her whole body was wrapped in a wide, heavy red robe, and the smooth red veil fell down to cover her entire face.

A gust of wind blew by, lifting one small corner of the veil.

The boy saw her lips, a vivid, blood-red color. In the stillness of the night, they curved into an eerie smile.

And yet, everyone said she was a woman with no face.
