Wei Zheng (580-643), courtesy name Xuancheng, was a Han Chinese native of Julu (present-day Julu County, Xingtai, Hebei; some say Jinzhou or Guantao County in Hebei) and a politician of the Tang dynasty. He served as Remonstrance Advisor and Grand Master of the Left, and was enfeoffed as Duke of Zheng. Famous for his forthright remonstrations, he was one of China's most renowned remonstrators and enjoyed a lofty reputation. His works include the preface and commentary to the Book of Sui, as well as general discussions in the Book of Liang, Book of Chen, and Book of Qi. Many of his statements can be found in the Zhenguan Zhengyao.
Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, was the second emperor of the Tang dynasty, as well as a politician, military strategist, calligrapher, and poet. His name means "to aid the world and bring peace to the people." He was Han Chinese, born in Chengji, Longxi (present-day Tianshui, Gansu), and his ancestral home was Longqing, Zhao Commandery (present-day Longyao County, Xingtai). At the beginning of the Tang dynasty, he was made Prince of Qin and won many glorious military victories. After ascending the throne, he actively listened to his ministers' opinions and worked hard to govern through civil administration, becoming one of the most celebrated statesmen and enlightened rulers in Chinese history. He actively eliminated separatist forces throughout the land, humbly accepted advice, promoted frugality throughout the country, and allowed the people to recover and prosper. As a result, the empire enjoyed peace and stability. He ushered in the famous "Reign of Zhenguan," laying an important foundation for the later "Kaiyuan Flourishing Age" and bringing traditional Chinese agrarian society to its height.

Li Shimin: "Xuancheng, we cannot be born on the same day, in the same month, and in the same year, nor can we die on the same day, in the same month, and in the same year. In life, we cannot live under the same roof. All I ask is that, after death, we may be buried together."
