The world is fickle, people are cruel, and rain at dusk makes flowers fall all too easily...
Tang Wan's poem, "Phoenix Hairpin," speaks of the hardships of the world and the helplessness of those who live in it.
Eugenie, as Balzac portrayed her, withers amid hopeless love and a life like that of an ascetic. That is because she has always lived this way and never changed, even though Charles entered her life. He never truly changed anything, just as Balzac wrote at the end of the novel: she lived in society, yet did not belong to it.
But what if she had entered society? No one can change the world...
And so this short story came to be. It's a little angsty, so read with caution.
