A short story set in the Republican era. I wrote the opening a long time ago and have finally finished the ending. It's been published in an internal magazine. o(╯□╰)o
Gao Zhanyun's car had barely turned a corner when the bustling world seemed to come rushing toward them, dazzling and splendid.
"I'm sorry, Qiuqiu." Gao Zhanyun's apology broke the silence in the car.
"Why?" Qingqiu merely asked in return.
"What happened tonight was my fault. I dragged you and your sister into an unpleasant situation." Gao Zhanyun admitted it readily. In that respect, he was still a responsible, decent man.
Qingqiu smiled faintly. "And after you apologize?"
Gao Zhanyun fell silent for a moment, then gave a vague answer. "I know what to do."
Outside the car, the scenery was dazzling, neon lights flickering. The singing girls knew nothing of the grief of a fallen kingdom, still singing across the river. It had always been this way, it seemed: no matter how turbulent the world, the music and dancing went on. Thinking this, Qingqiu couldn't help asking, "Will there be a war?"
"Hm?" Gao Zhanyun didn't understand at first. After a pause, he answered, "Ah, it's hard to say."
"An age of chaos." Qingqiu turned to look at him. "In times like these, just staying alive is no easy thing."
Gao Zhanyun glanced at her. "Why so pensive all of a sudden?"
"I was just thinking, in a world where even our lives aren't secure, love seems so insignificant. Why are there still so many people willing to brave fire and water for it?"
