In their first lifetime, he was the crown prince and she was his crown princess. But he cast her aside for the woman he loved, and her family was executed because of her.
In their second lifetime, he was the emperor and she was his empress. But for a princess presented to him as tribute from the borderlands, he had her confined and their child killed.
The gods said, "You gave him your heart, and he owes you his love. If he does not repay you, he will suffer for all eternity."
The Buddha said, "Enter my faith, and forget your former life. Empty yourself of all attachment. Your ties to the mortal world remain unbroken, and your heart is filled with boundless hatred. How can you attain enlightenment?"
Then let the gods and Buddhas of the heavens watch as I send this ungrateful man down to the Eighteen Levels of Hell, where he will suffer forever in the fires of karma.
In their third lifetime, the rights and wrongs, the debts and grievances, will finally be settled.
This is actually an unconventional tale of revenge on a faithless lover. The heroine suffers, but the hero suffers even more. I have to say, this is a deeply satisfying story.
