Almost all the questions that interest the speculative mind most are questions that science cannot answer. Is the world divided into mind and matter? If so, what is the heart? What are things? Is the mind subordinate to things? Or does it have independent capabilities? Does the universe have any unity or purpose? Is it evolving towards a certain goal? Are there any natural laws? Or is our belief in natural law simply driven by our order-loving nature? Is man what astronomers see him as, a tiny lump of impure carbon and water, crawling impotently on a small and unimportant planet? Or is he what Hamlet sees? Maybe he's both at the same time? Is there one way of life that is noble and another that is mean? Or are all lifestyles completely illusory and meaningless? If there is a noble way of life, what does it contain? How can we achieve it? Must goodness, in order to be worthy of respect, be eternal?
Or is the universe worth pursuing even if it is heading unwaveringly toward death? Is there such a thing as wisdom, or is what appears to be wisdom just pure stupidity?
