The tree doesn't take part in how the stories unfold, aside from having its branches chopped off for firewood or being used for a hanging or something. It can grow wherever it likes, but once it appears somewhere in a chapter, it can't move until that part of the story ends.
As for how the tree gets to other places... I gaze into the distance...
