At their first meeting at a banquet, Shen Yanbai "accidentally" spilled wine all over Lu Qingya. Lu Qingya glanced up. "The corners of your mouth turned up for half a second. You did that on purpose." It was the first time anyone had called Shen Yanbai out on the spot, and he laughed and admitted it. Later, he bought the gym, coffee shop, and convenience store downstairs that Lu Qingya frequented, then "boxed" him into his company. Cursing him for unlawful confinement, Lu Qingya moved into his villa, bringing a copy of the criminal code and the Anti-Domestic Violence Law in his suitcase. Shen Yanbai put a GPS ankle monitor on him, but Lu Qingya had it altered into a necklace and hung it around his neck. "Want to monitor me? Come do it openly."
Later, Lu Qingya used the ankle monitor's data to report the Shen Corporation for tax evasion. Shen Yanbai flew back in the middle of the night and, eyes bloodshot, grabbed him by the throat. Pinned against the wall, Lu Qingya smiled and kissed him. "You can't keep me locked up." Shen Yanbai froze. For the first time, he realized that a chain only stops choking when both people choose to wear it.
Two people shattered by their families of origin: one treats possession like oxygen, the other treats being controlled like painkillers. They could have fed each other's wounds and rotted together. But Lu Qingya's stubborn refusal to let go of his broken principles pulled Shen Yanbai from "imprisonment" toward "standing side by side," while Shen Yanbai's clingy, impossible-to-shake madness tore Lu Qingya out of the belief that "being beaten is the only way to feel loved."
Theme: Love is not one-sided possession or demands. It is two people with cracks in them learning, through rubbing against each other, to turn "I lock you up" into "I'll stay by your side," and "You control me" into "I trust you."
