It rains often in Linshui. Shen Qinghe sorts through the belongings of unclaimed dead people.
She has a black leather ledger where she records every detail about her mother: her mother added a little salt to her osmanthus candy; the last syllable stretched out when her mother said her name; her mother walked without making a sound.
She has to write it all down, because every time she takes something from a dead person's room that didn't belong to them, she forgets a piece of her mother.
Then, in Chen Shouyi's room, she finds a photograph of herself at five years old. On the back, in her mother's handwriting, are the words:
"Qinghe, don't go back to Number Seven."
