During the turbulent Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, Yang Zhi, second empress of Sima Yan, founding emperor of the Western Jin, was starved to death at Jinyong Fortress. Her death can be considered the beginning of the War of the Eight Princes, and indirectly led to the Five Barbarians ravaging China, forcing the southward migration of the aristocracy and bringing Chinese civilization to the brink of extinction.
I caught a glimpse of her in the history books and remembered this woman, praised as “gentle and virtuous, her beauty befitting the imperial chambers.”
Once, by chance, I met her in a dream. She starved to death at Jinyong in my arms, then said she would plead with the King of Hell so that we could meet again in the future.
When I awoke, I had become a member of the Sima family's band of assassins: Sima Li, a eunuch from birth.
When a woman’s soul from the future tries to protect, amid the cannibalistic chaos of the Wei and Jin era, a woman destined to die in a single line of the history books, perhaps one wrong move will cost us everything. But I came for her, and I would die for her.
And so begins a grand campaign to save Yang Zhi.
