Synopsis
Ninth Princess Li Heyuan was born under an ill omen. A thousand miles of land lay barren, her mother died in childbirth, and she was said to bring misfortune to her father, mother, and sovereign. She was imprisoned in the palace from then on, until a great fire in the eleventh year of Tianyuan lit up half the palace sky and completely burned away the first half of her life as Li Heyuan.
The old emperor's dog, raised for ten years, turned on him one day and bit its master to death. When wanted posters for the Ninth Princess covered the entire north, the young woman was aboard a ship heading south, clutching the broken jade her foster mother had given her. Before she could even worry about what lay ahead, a tremendous crash sounded. The ship was destroyed and everyone aboard died. When she opened her eyes again beneath the pale moonlight, only she and a gravely injured young man remained.
Seventeen was an assassin, the sharpest blade in Feng Sishi's hands. Yet when faced with the weeping girl before him, he had no idea what to do for the first time in his life.
"Let go, that hurts! Look at my face, does it look familiar? You don't have to admit anything, but don't repay my kindness with betrayal."
"Forget it. No one likes me anyway. Go wherever you want. What do I care if you live or die? I try to be kind, and you throw it back in my face."
"I'm sorry." The girl didn't react and kept crying. "I'm sorry." The red-eyed girl suddenly changed her expression in the blink of an eye. "My name is A Zhao. Remember it: I'm the one who saved your life."
In the little town of Luhua Ferry, the fugitive Ninth Princess of the day rested her chin in her hands. "Fish again? I'm going to turn into a fish at this rate." The greatest assassin under heaven scraped scales off a fish and washed his hands before cooking. "Yesterday was crucian carp, today it's snakehead. This one's meatier, so eat up."
When she opened her eyes again, Li Heyuan had become Bai Chunhe, a cousin who was about to marry into the Zhou family in the south. Everyone knew she wasn't really Bai Chunhe, but she had to be. The manor was full of secrets and the mist of deception was thick, but at least an old acquaintance was by her side. Seventeen still wore a cold expression, like an evil spirit come to claim her life. Li Heyuan had only him now, but the truth could not stay hidden forever.
"Seventeen, have you been searching for the Ninth Princess all this time? It's me. Take me back, greatest assassin."
"Your Highness." The young man dropped to one knee and brushed his cheek against her hand. Her slender reflection was all he could see.
The world descended into chaos. Li Heyuan tore away the disguise of Bai Chunhe and reclaimed her identity as the Ninth Princess. After another spring snowfall in the imperial capital, the Ninth Princess, cast aside by fate, ascended the high platform. The young man, sword in hand, slew every last traitor.
"My esteemed ministers, does anyone still object?" One particularly stubborn official was just about to launch into an impassioned argument when she looked up and saw the new emperor watching her with amusement, while Jiang Yuan, the commander, stared at her as if she were already dead.
"The emperor is wise." She had no idea why, but her legs had already taken her to her knees, and her head was eager to meet the ground.
