In her previous life, Hua Mulan spent ten years serving in the army in her father's place. On the day she returned victorious, her childhood friend Li Xuan sent her to prison with a cup of poisoned wine. Her crime: being a spy for the Rouran. Before her execution, she learned the truth: her father's death, ten years of being used, and her imprisonment had all been Li Xuan's doing.
Reborn at eighteen in a military camp on the northern frontier, she remembers how everyone died, every wrong turn, and every lie hidden beneath Li Xuan's gentle facade. This time, she will not run. She leads the nineteen brothers-in-arms who were fated to die in her previous life safely out of the northern frontier, exposes Li Xuan's true nature in public, revealing how he traded lives for military honors, then leaves the army without looking back.
Traveling west to Yunzhong Commandery, she finds the maternal grandmother her mother refused to speak of until the day she died. The Shen family leads the largest Silk Road trading caravan in Northern Wei, and its women are in charge. Her grandmother gives her a ledger, a key, and one piece of advice: "A woman needs to be capable in her own right."
With the Shen family's money and connections, Mulan builds the first Mulan Academy. She takes in embroiderers who have suffered domestic abuse and teaches them to wield swords. She takes in orphaned girls sold into brothels and teaches them bookkeeping. She takes in widows driven from their husbands' homes and teaches them to read and bring lawsuits. Every woman who leaves goes back to her hometown and builds another academy.
From one academy to a hundred, from Yunzhong Commandery to all of Northern Wei. The court condemns her for "spreading heretical ideas," and the great families resent her for "letting women meddle in government." But the academy's graduates are everywhere, and their taxes support half of Northern Wei. At last, the Empress Dowager issues an edict: women may register their own households, inherit property, and divorce their husbands.
Mulan asks for no reward. She does only one thing: make sure that no daughter under heaven ever has to take her father's place in the army again.
Theme: The awakening of women's strength: from Mulan saving herself, to Zhou Xiuxiu learning to save herself, to every woman who is saved going on to save others. True female empowerment does not mean making one woman strong. It means ensuring that no woman has to wait for a hero again.
