The tabby cat at Prince Yan's residence recently had a new litter. One of the kittens was probably born weak. While the others were leaping around at an age when it was still learning to walk, it could barely stand. So even after it grew up to be just like any other cat, it still had a bad temper, picking fights with anything that displeased it.
Lin Shu figured it wasn't her temper that was the problem. There was something wrong with the feng shui at the prince's residence. Everyone there managed to annoy her, whether she met them one at a time or in pairs.
Especially Xuan Jin, who wanted to keep her as a pet.
When Xuan Jin reached out for a pet, she hissed. When he brought her food, she buried her head and gobbled it down.
After eating her fill, Lin Shu basked comfortably in the sun. "I ate the food, so you can take your good intentions back."
But Xuan Jin sat down beside her, his eyes dark as he gazed at Lin Shu. Then he started telling ghost stories about a deceased friend, rambling about dreaming of an old friend and asking a kitten to pass on a message.
Asking someone who's afraid of ghosts to pass on a message is like asking someone who faints at the sight of blood to slaughter a pig.
Lin Shu's fur stood on end as she listened. Grumbling, she moved a ridiculously long way from Xuan Jin. "Just wait. Tonight, I'll claw at your clothes, knock over your teacups, and dirty up your lovely home."
Back where he sat, Xuan Jin gathered the bowls and plates the kitten had left spotless and smiled faintly.
