Autumn, 2147. No apocalyptic fire rained down to burn the cities, and no towering tsunami struck. The collapse of human civilization came quietly and without warning. A bizarre ecological disaster later known as the Red Tide swept across the globe. Red clouds of spores surged up from the depths of the oceans, pierced the atmosphere, and spread on the wind over every city. Living things that inhaled the spores underwent malignant mutations: beasts went feral, insects grew enormous, and most terrifying of all, wave after wave of mutated predators were born, monstrous creatures of flesh and blood beyond human comprehension. Their hides were tough, they feared no conventional small arms, they moved in uncanny ways, and they hunted in packs. Cities became hunting grounds, streets filled with bones, and skyscrapers became nests for monsters. The order, laws, and civilization of modern society were utterly erased in just six months. Survival became humanity's sole instinct.
